King Mackerel & The Blues Are Running
Returns to Carteret County June 30th - July 3rd and July 7th-- 10th, 2004

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The hit musical King Mackerel & The Blues Are Running: Songs & Stories of the Carolina Coast returns to Carteret County this summer, a joint presentation by, and fundraiser for, the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and the North Carolina Coastal Federation. This production is made possible with help from Carteret Community College and the Carteret Community Theater, with further support from the Carteret County News-Times, which has called King Mackerel "a show you don't want to miss."

The eight-show King Mackerel run features the original Coastal Cohorts-bassist Don Dixon, pianist Bland Simpson, and guitarist Jim Wann. Since creating the show in Chapel Hill in late 1985, the trio has performed it all over North Carolina (from Flat Rock to Manteo), and up and down the East Coast (from Tybee Light, Georgia, to 42nd Street in New York City). Following King Mackerel's 1996 Kennedy Center run in Washington, D.C., UNC Center for Public Television videotaped the show, which has had numerous statewide broadcasts.

"The Coastal Federation and the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum are premier forces for the preservation of our coast's natural and cultural heritage," said co-author Bland Simpson, a two-term member of NCCF's board. "We've put the show up for the Federation many times ('86-'88 in Carteret, '94 inWilmington and Durham, '96 in Durham), and now Jim, Don and I are very excited about this new joint effort with NCCF and the Waterfowl Museum."

King Mackerel has garnered significant press acclaim over its two decades, including such notices as:

* "A musical Valentine to coastal life!" (News & Observer);

* "So pro-Outer Banks, the Legislature should pass a bill designating it the State Musical of North Carolina!" (Charlotte Observer);

* "Carolina fish tale is quite a catch . . . pure, salt-watered delight . . . wonderfully evokes a carefree, buddy-buddy world of fish, fishermen and the lovely Carolina coast." (New York Post);

* "A good-time tonic!" (Durham Morning Herald);

* "An evening the whole family can enjoy together, which is a great rarity these days . . . Mackerel hooks some fine songs." (Washington Times)

King Mackerel will run Wednesday through Sunday (June 30th-July 3rd and July 7th - 10th, 2004) at Joslyn Hall, Carteret Community College, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 ($12 to CSWM and NCCF members), and information/box office number is 252-728-1500.
